Most dental trips to Tbilisi include some quiet days: waiting for swelling to settle, between implant stages, or while crowns are being made. Tbilisi is a lovely city to spend them in. Below we've sorted ideas into two groups:

  • 🟢 Gentle, usually fine soon after dental work: low effort, short distances, easy to stop and rest.
  • 🟠 Better before treatment or after full recovery: heat, alcohol, long days on the road, strenuous walking or high altitude.

Why some activities can wait

NHS aftercare advice for tooth extractions, such as this Kent Community Health NHS leaflet, advises no bending, heavy lifting or exercise on the day, no alcohol for 24 to 48 hours because it can cause a wound infection, and care with hot drinks while you are still numb. Implant surgery is also a surgical procedure, so your dentist may give you similar advice. Saunas and hot baths raise your body temperature, and long tours make it hard to rest or eat soft food on time. Your dentist will tell you how long to wait in your case.

🟢 Gentle ideas in Tbilisi

Rike Park and the cable car to Narikala. The modern Rike cable car runs about 500 m from Rike Park up to Narikala Fortress (Georgia Travel), so you get the views without the climb. At the top is St. Nicholas Church, rebuilt in 1997 on 13th-century foundations (Georgia Travel – Narikala). The Tbilisi Transport Company publishes the current cable car fare on its tariff page. Rike Park itself lies on the left bank of the Mtkvari river (Georgia Travel – Rike Park). Note that the fortress grounds are uneven, so walk slowly.

Georgian National Museum. On Rustaveli Avenue, the museum tells the story of Georgia's archaeology, history and culture (Georgia Travel). It's indoors and quiet, with places to sit, which makes it ideal for a rainy or tired day. Check opening hours on the museum's website.

A slow walk in the Old Town. Narrow cobbled streets, wooden houses with coloured balconies and old churches (Georgia Travel). Keep it short, stop at cafés, and pick something lukewarm and soft if you're still healing.

Turtle Lake cable car. The vintage cable car runs from Vake Park to Turtle Lake in about six minutes (Georgia Travel). Nearby is the Open Air Museum of Ethnography, in the hills near Turtle Lake (Georgia Travel). Its grounds are hilly, so treat it as a gentle option only once you feel well.

Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba). One of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world, completed in 2004 (Georgia Travel). A short taxi ride and a calm visit.

Mtatsminda Park. Tbilisi City Hall lists Mtatsminda as a culture and recreation park above the city, connected by funicular (Tbilisi City Hall). Ride up for the view and a quiet hour; skip the thrill rides for now.

Tbilisi Botanical Garden 🟢/🟠. More than 3,500 plant species and the Tsavkisistskali Waterfall, but you reach it by "a steep ascent from the sulfur baths" (Georgia Travel). It's fine on an easy pace once you feel steady. Leave the zipline from Narikala for later.

🟠 Better before treatment or after full recovery

Sulfur baths (Abanotubani). The domed bathhouses in the Old Town, such as Chreli Abano, are a classic Tbilisi experience. Hot water and steam, though, are exactly what many dentists ask you to avoid right after surgery. Book them on your first days, before treatment, or on a later trip. You can still admire the domes from outside at any time.

Day trips: Kakheti, Kazbegi and Mtskheta. Wine tastings, long drives and mountain roads are usually better before treatment or after full recovery. Our guide to tours from Tbilisi covers these trips, how far they are, and guided tours for each.

Practical recovery tips for sightseeing

  1. Plan big trips first. If you can, do Kazbegi, Kakheti and the sulfur baths in the days before your surgery.
  2. Keep recovery days short and close. One gentle outing, then rest.
  3. Carry essentials: water, any medicine your dentist prescribed, gauze, and the clinic's phone number.
  4. Eat on schedule. Choose places with soups or soft dishes, and avoid very hot or hard food if you've been told to.
  5. Use taxis or a driver rather than long walks up hills; see hiring a driver or renting a car in Tbilisi.
  6. Ask your dentist before anything strenuous, hot, alcoholic or at altitude.

FAQ

How soon after dental surgery can I go sightseeing?

Ask your dentist. General NHS aftercare advice for extractions includes avoiding bending, heavy lifting and exercise on the day (Kent Community Health NHS), so keep the first day for rest.

Can I drink wine after treatment?

The same NHS leaflet advises no alcohol for 24 to 48 hours after an extraction (Kent Community Health NHS). Your dentist may advise longer after implant surgery, so save wine tours for before treatment or after you heal.

Is Kazbegi a good idea during recovery?

It is a long day in the mountains, so plan it before treatment or after full recovery, and ask your dentist. Our guide to tours from Tbilisi gives the travel time and altitude advice.

What is the easiest outing on a tired day?

An indoor visit such as the Georgian National Museum, or the short cable car ride from Rike Park to Narikala (Georgia Travel).
